Samsung profit surges despite Note 7 battery fiasco www.bbc.com

Despite the fiasco with its flagship Galaxy Note 7 phone, Samsung Electronics is forecasting a 50% surge in profits for the fourth quarter.
The earnings estimate is higher than analysts' predicted and would mark its highest quarterly profit since 2013.
In October, the world's largest smartphone maker had to scrap the Note 7 after batteries caught fire and even replacement devices went up in smoke.
The strong results are due to Samsung's semiconductor and display businesses.
The South Korean tech giant said it expected to post 9.2tn won ($7.8bn, £6.2bn) in operating profit for the months from September to December.
Demand for memory chip and displays is expected to remain high throughout 2017, giving investors a bright outlook for the next year.
Note 7 profit hit
In an earlier profit forecast for the fourth quarter, Samsung had said it expected the Note 7 recall would mean a $2.1bn hit to their profits.
The company first issued a recall for the Galaxy Note 7 in September following complaints about exploding batteries.

After replacement devices deemed safe were also found to overheat and catch fire, the company scrapped the phone entirely.
Samsung said that it will "very soon" share details of its inquiry into the cause of the Note 7 problems.
The company will disclose a detailed earnings release for the quarter in late January which will give more insights into the performance of its individual businesses.

Apple pulls New York Times app from China app store www.bbc.com

Apple has withdrawn the New York Times from its China App Store, following a request from Chinese authorities.
The paper said the move was aimed at preventing readers in China "from accessing independent news coverage".
Apple said they had been informed the app violated Chinese regulations but did not say what rules had been broken.
Western media have long been facing difficulties making their content available in China with many outlets frequently or permanently blocked.
According to the New York Times, Apple removed both the English-language and Chinese-language apps from the App Store in China on 23 December.
The paper cited an Apple spokesperson as saying the firm had been "informed that the app is in violation of local regulations" which meant it had to be taken down.
"When this situation changes, the app store will once again offer the New York Times app for download in China," the spokesman

The paper's website has been blocked in China since 2012 after it published a number of reports on the private wealth of members of the political elite and their families.
The New York Times attributes the request to pull the app to new regulations officially designed to curb activities "such as endangering national security, disrupting social order and violating the legitimate rights and interests of others".
"The request by the Chinese authorities to remove our apps is part of their wider attempt to prevent readers in China from accessing independent news coverage by The New York Times of that country, coverage which is no different from the journalism we do about every other country in the world," the paper's spokeswoman Eileen Murphy said.
Users who have their accounts registered on an App Store other than the Chinese one can still download the apps.
Apps from some other international media outlets can still be accessed, including the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, BBC News, the Financial Times, ABC News, CNN, and Reuters.
In the case of the BBC, the Chinese-language website is blocked while the English version occasionally has some human rights or political stories blocked on both the website and the app.
A number of other Western websites like Google, YouTube and Facebook are also blocked in China.

South Korea scandal: Choi and Park cases in court www.bbc.com

The trial of Choi Soon-sil, the woman at the centre of an influence-peddling scandal involving South Korea's president, has got under way.
Ms Choi, a close friend of President Park Geun-hye, is charged with abuse of power and attempted fraud.
Separately, the Constitutional Court began considering President Park's impeachment over the scandal.
That trial, where the court must ratify or overturn a parliamentary impeachment vote, began despite Ms Park's absence.
Proceedings opened on Tuesday but were curtailed because Ms Park did not attend. On Thursday the court went ahead anyway.
Her lawyer has previously said Ms Park will not be in court "unless there are special circumstances", Yonhap news agency reported.
Both cases centre on allegations President Park gave Ms Choi unauthorised access to government decisions and allowed her to exploit their close relationship to solicit money from corporations for foundations from which she benefitted.
Both women have apologised but deny committing criminal offences.

The scandal has rocked South Korea, sparking several huge demonstrations.
While the impeachment process continues, Ms Park remains formally president but with most of her powers handed to the prime minister, a role that normally has little executive authority.
South Korean President Park Geun-hye listens to a reporter's question during a meeting with reporters at the Presidential Blue House in Seoul, South Korea, in this handout picture provided by the Presidential Blue House and released by Yonhap on 1 January

Separately, Yonhap news agency reports that South Korea has sent a formal extradition request to Denmark for the daughter of Ms Choi, several days after saying they were working on it.
Chung Yoo-ra, a former national equestrian rider, was arrested in Denmark on Sunday and later appeared in court accused of overstaying her visa.
Part of the investigation into Ms Choi's activities relates to a gift horse from South Korean conglomerate Samsung to Ms Choi, allegedly for Ms Chung's training.
The prestigious Ewha Women's University in Seoul is also accused of giving Ms Chung a place - she has since left - because of her mother's connections.

Nissan's Ghosn says he'll monitor Trump policies www.nhk.or.jp

Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn says he will keep a close eye on President-elect Donald Trump's policies. Earlier on Tuesday, US automaker Ford announced it is canceling plans to build a plant in Mexico.

The move comes as Trump ramps up criticism of companies he claims have moved US jobs overseas. Ford says it will instead expand a domestic plant, creating 700 jobs.

Ghosn said in an interview with CNBC that the US market is very important for most global automakers.
He said all automakers will be monitoring what measures the new administration takes.

Ghosn said any changes to production in the US will depend on Trump's actions.

Many Japanese auto and parts makers have moved manufacturing to Mexico to take advantage of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

Under NAFTA, tariffs aren't imposed on automobiles exported from Mexico to the US. But companies are growing increasingly concerned that this may change under Trump.

Sogou plans to raise $5b in US offering www.chinadaily.com

The head of China's third-biggest search engine Sogou said he expects his company to launch a US initial public offering with a valuation of as much as $5 billion-as it raises cash to close the gap with leader Baidu Inc in the mobile market.

Sogou, whose name means "search dog," plans to sell about 10 percent of its shares in an IPO that will probably be held this year, Chief Executive Officer Wang Xiaochuan said in an interview. The company, which is backed by social media giant Tencent Holdings Ltd and Sohu.com Inc, hasn't formally hired banks to run the listing. Sohu shares rose the most in 10 months on Wednesday.

While Baidu remains the biggest provider across all platforms in China, it's under siege after a scandal over medical advertising, as smaller rivals including Sogou and Qihoo 360 Technology Co win mobile users. Wang said he planned to use part of the IPO proceeds to improve search results by backing companies developing artificial intelligence and machine-learning technologies.

"Over the past year, we've seen a trend where people are finding themselves not trusting Baidu as much and some are even seeking a replacement," he said at the company's Beijing headquarters.

"So over the next year or two, as more people feel more comfortable with Sogou, they'll realize it is able to replace Baidu."

Shares of Sohu rose 4.9 percent to $35.54 in New York, the biggest gain since March 4. The stock has declined 34 percent in the past year.

Baidu accounted for 44.5 percent of mobile search queries in the third quarter, while Alibaba Group Holding Ltd-backed Shenma had 20.8 percent and Sogou was third with 16.2 percent, according to research from iiMedia.

Other independent researchers, including Analysys International, reported that Sogou was China's second-largest provider to the country's mobile users while some surveys have the company as the nation's second-largest overall.

Wang said Sogou could match Baidu in mobile search within three years. Baidu declined to comment.

Apple confirms $1bn investment in SoftBank tech fund www.asia.nikkei.com

Apple Inc confirmed on Wednesday its plans to invest $1 billion in a tech fund being set up by Japan's SoftBank Group.

SoftBank has said it is investing at least $25 billion in the fund and has been in talks with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund for an investment that could be as much as $45 billion.

"We believe their new fund will speed the development of technologies which may be strategically important to Apple," company spokesman Josh Rosenstock told Reuters.

SoftBank has also said that it plans to make future large-scale investments via the tech fund, rather than on its own.

Reuters reported in December, citing sources familiar with the matter, that Apple had held talks with SoftBank about the investment.

SoftBank confirmed that Apple invested, said Benjamin Spicehandler, an outside public relations representative for SoftBank. He added that Foxconn, Oracle founder Larry Ellison's family office and chipmaker Qualcomm also have said they intend to invest in the fund.

China steps up efforts to cut coal capacity www.mining.com

China, the world’s largest coal consumer and producer, is not giving up on its long-term plans of reducing the share of coal in its overall energy mix and consequent smog and greenhouse gas emissions.

Cutbacks will be focused on smaller mines in north and east China, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said.
Despite reversing in November some of the restrictions imposed to local coal miners in early 2016 due to a spike in prices for the commodity, Beijing announced late last week it will continue to cut the capacity of its coal mines by 800 million tonnes a year until 2020.

Unveiling the plan’s details, the country’s top economic planner said the goal is to eliminate “outdated” and inefficient coal capacity every year while adding 500m tonnes of “advanced” capacity. The cutbacks will be focused on smaller mines in the north-east, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), according to state-run Xinhua news agency.

Main producers, mostly based on China’s western regions such as Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang, are expected instead to boost supplies. As a result, the NDRC expects total coal output to increase to around 3.9 billion tonnes by 2020, compared to 3.75 billion tonnes in 2015. It also anticipates that the country will burn around 4.1 billion tonnes compared to 3.96 billion tonnes last year — quite a modest growth rate.

The fresh measures come on the heels of an International Energy Agency's (IEA) report that estimates China's coal use is likely to have peaked in 2013.

Coal generated 84% of all electricity in Asia’s richest economy in 2014, but the IEA's forecasts that figure will drop down to about 54% in 2040.

Beijing has also made public its intention of modernizing its coal-fired power plants by 2020 in an effort to cut “polluting” emissions by 60%. The government also aims to add over 20 million kilowatts of installed wind power and more than 15 million kilowatts of installed photovoltaic power by the end of the decade.

Mining relations to be regulated by specific law www.montsame.mn

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Actions regarding the relations of the mining industry and mineral resources were used to be regulated by Law on Mineral Resources. However, it is deemed that the latter law has been mostly associated with the relations connected to obtaining special licenses for exploration and their payment and fees. Therefore, the Ministry of Mining has begun formulating a bill on mining.

The bill, which is being currently drawn up, will regulate all types of mining activities, from identifying mining resources, opening and closing of mines and include provisions towards the engineering and technological activities and safety of miners.
