The European Parliament has approved a free trade agreement between the European Union and Canada.
The EU's legislature in Strasbourg, France, on Wednesday voted in favor of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with Canada -- the EU's first free trade pact with a major industrialized economy.
Both sides signed the agreement in October, after 7 years of negotiations.
The deal will remove tariffs on 99 percent of agricultural and industrial products traded between the bloc and Canada.
It is expected to take effect as early as next month, except for in some fields, such as investment, that require ratification by all member states.
The EU has expressed strong concerns about US President Donald Trump's protectionist policy.
EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said the EU and Canada will together prove that protectionism won't work.
The EU is also negotiating an Economic Partnership Agreement with Japan. Both sides hope to reach a broad agreement at an early date this year.
