South Korea's Kia tops US car quality ranking www.bbc.com

South Korean car maker Kia has come top in a closely watched US car quality ranking, edging out the luxury brands that usually claim the crown.
It is the first time that a non-premium brand has come first in the annual study by consultancy J.D. Power.
The survey of more than 80,000 car buyers found that Kia had the fewest problems in the first 90 days, followed by Porsche, Hyundai, Toyota and BMW.
Worst performers were Daimler's Smart, Fiat, Volvo, Land Rover and Mini.
In the ranking of 33 cars brands, 21 saw an improvement over the past year.
The study also showed that for only the second time in the past 30 years, US brands received better marks collectively than foreign cars.
J.D. Power said that in past years, electronic features such as Bluetooth, voice recognition and touch screens had often been prone to glitches dragging down the results and that this year carmakers had managed to improve their reliability.
Together with its affiliate Hyundai Motor, Kia is the world's fifth largest automaker by sales.

China glut reshaping EU steel industry www.asia.nikkei.com

FRANKFURT/LONDON -- With Britain set to vote Thursday on whether to remain in the European Union, the country has seen its fair share of political drama recently. But the turmoil is not just limited to the country's political sphere: The steel industry is also in chaos, with the planned pullout of India-based Tata Steel from the U.K. likely to have a big impact not only there but throughout the EU, where 330,000 people have jobs in the sector.

Geert Van Poelvoorde, executive vice president of ArcelorMittal and president of the European Steel Association, or Eurofer, was in Brussels in April for an annual steel conference organized by the industry body. He said that cheap steel from China was hurting European steelmakers, and that some 80,000 jobs, or 20% of total European steel industry employment, have been lost since the global financial crisis erupted in 2008.

Van Poelvoorde also complained that the EU was slow to take action to counter Chinese steel dumping. While the U.S. has increased tariffs on Chinese steel products to some 260%, levies in Europe have remained at 30% to 60%.

He cited Tata's possible departure from the U.K. as clear evidence of how bad things are getting. The company's British operations, which have the second-largest output capacity in Europe, have pummeled by cheap imports from China, posting losses for years. The Indian parent announced plans in late March to sell the local business.

At the entrance of the conference venue was a sign reading "Save Our Steel." Similar signs can be spotted in the Welsh town of Port Talbot, home to a Tata plant. The region has relied heavily on Tata's steel business, and scared plant workers have been protesting the planned pullout ever since the announcement.

So far, British commodities trader Liberty House and others have volunteered to buy Tata's U.K. unit, while local plant workers have proposed retaining the business through a management buyout. Negotiations have been slow and difficult, however. Tata initially planned to finalize its decision soon after the Brexit poll, but July is now looking more likely.

If the Port Talbot plant, the U.K.'s largest steel factory, is shuttered, the country's economy will certainly feel it. According to British think tank Institute for Public Policy Research, the closure would affect 15,000 workers at Tata's locations across the U.K. and possibly threaten another 40,000 in related industries.

Tata entered the U.K. by acquiring what was once the state-owned British Steel. According to a survey by YouGov, a British research company, more than 60% of people in the U.K. support the nationalization of Tata's U.K. unit. There appears to be a special attachment among the British to the steel industry, which helped drive the economy during the Industrial Revolution.

But when talk of nationalization first came up, British Prime Minister David Cameron noted that it went against the country's long-term efforts to promote privatization. The tone changed in April, when the government announced its intention to purchase a stake of up to 25% in the local British unit, in response to growing calls for a rescue measure to retain jobs.

Moscow commute at 1,200 kph & new Silk Road: Russia explores Hyperloop sci-fi dream www.rt.com

Russian company Summa Group signed an agreement on Tuesday with Los Angeles-based Hyperloop One to explore building a futuristic, high-speed transport system in Moscow.
"Hyperloop can improve life dramatically for the 16 million people in the greater Moscow area, cutting their commute to a fraction of what it is today," Shervin Pishevar, co-founder of Hyperloop One, was cited as saying by Reuters.A Hyperloop system involves using magnets to levitate pods inside an airless tube, creating conditions in which the floating pods could transport people and cargo at speeds of up to 750 mph (1,200 kph).

The sides also plan to build a new Silk Road to transport cargo at ultra-high speeds between China and the Mediterranean Sea."Our longer term vision is to work with Russia to implement a transformative new Silk Road: a cargo Hyperloop that whisks freight containers from China to Europe in a day," Pishevar said.

According to Hyperloop One CEO Rob Lloyd, it’s unclear how much it will cost to build a Hyperloop in Moscow, and the system would not necessarily travel at its top speed in a metropolitan area like the Russian capital. Last month Lloyd said the company will build a system capable of transporting cargo by 2019 and passengers by 2021.Transportation infrastructure developer Summa Group and Hyperloop One signed a memorandum of understanding last week at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Pishevar during the forum and expressed his support for the project. The president’s backing though didn’t mean public fund investments and tax breaks because it’s a private investment project, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Hyperloop was first proposed in 2013 by US billionaire Elon Musk as an up-to-date, open-sourced concept. At the moment there are no functioning Hyperloops in the world, and skeptics claim the idea of traveling at such high speeds in a sealed tube seems like a sci-fi dream – with many challenges the designers will have to overcome, such as motion sickness.

Hyperloop feasibility studies are underway in Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Dubai, the Port of Los Angeles, and the United Kingdom.

US lays anti-dumping duties on steel from China www3.nhk.or.jp

The United States will impose hefty anti-dumping duties on a type of steel widely used in car production. The decision mainly targets China.

The International Trade Commission said on Wednesday that cold-rolled steel products are hurting US producers.

The commission slapped duties of more than 260 percent on Chinese products, in addition to tariffs of more than 250 percent, to offset China's export subsidies.

Japanese makers will also be hit with a roughly 70 percent anti-dumping tariff on the steel products.

US steel makers filed a complaint about the products last July, saying Chinese companies had more than tripled their exports to the United States in 2014 from the previous year by dumping cheap products.

The leaders of the Group of Seven countries discussed the issue in the Ise-Shima Summit in May.

The two US presidential candidates are also focusing on the issue in their campaigns.
