Minister of Health Chinburen Jigjidsuren and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Matilda Dimovska signed a Memorandum of Understanding on February 27.

According to the Ministry of Health, this MoU makes it possible, through UNDP, to directly purchase commonly used, high-cost, essential medicines for healthcare services that carry a high risk of supply disruption. These medicines will be purchased from a single source at quality standards and at reasonable prices.

Minister Chinburen emphasized that the Government of Mongolia and the ministry are paying significant attention to the issues of medicine quality and pricing, and that this is the first major step toward transitioning to a system that enables the procurement of quality medicines at reasonable prices. He also expressed gratitude to the UNDP for its consistent support to the Government of Mongolia in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and other national development priorities.

Under the memorandum, anti-hemophilia medicines which have been previously at risk of supply disruption and included in the “List of diseases and medicines covered by the state,” will be procured. Anti-hemophilia medicines are administered regularly to patients with blood clotting disorders to prevent and treat bleeding.

In addition, anti-epileptic medicines will be included in the list of drugs to be supplied from a single source.
