Mongolia has once again proven to be an island of freedom, according to the World Freedom Index www.open.kg
A fresh report from Freedom House was released in 2026.
“The human rights organization Freedom House has presented its annual report titled ‘Freedom in the World 2026’. In this study, Mongolia has once again been recognized as a ‘free country’. Experts assigned a score of 84 out of 100, reflecting the level of democratic institutions in the Land of Eternal Blue Sky,” reports MiddleAsianNews.
The classification of a country or region according to the ‘Freedom in the World’ indicator is determined by the total scores for political rights (from 0 to 40) and civil liberties (from 0 to 60).
According to the detailed report, Mongolia has 36 points out of 40 for political rights and 48 points out of 60 for civil liberties.
Since the peaceful revolution of 1990, multi-party elections have been introduced in Mongolia, allowing the country to establish itself as an electoral democracy, where political rights and civil liberties are enshrined at the institutional level.
The authors of the report emphasize that the weakening of democratic leadership on the global stage may lead to increased instability and conflict. If international institutions continue to lose influence, authoritarian regimes may regain popularity, which will negatively impact the security and economic interests of open societies.
