Glass bridge: China opens world's highest and longest www.bbc.com

The much-heralded "world's highest and longest" glass-bottomed bridge has opened to visitors in central China.
It connects two mountain cliffs in what are known as the Avatar mountains (the film was shot here) in Zhangjiajie, Hunan province.

Completed in December, the 430m-long bridge cost $3.4m (£2.6m) to build and stands 300m above ground, state news agency Xinhua reported.
It has been paved with 99 panes of three-layered transparent glass.
And according to officials, the 6m-wide bridge - designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan - has already set world records for its architecture and construction.

The year of glass bridges
Glass bridges in China have been a popular craze for the daring photo opportunities they provide. Events like mass yoga displays and even weddings have been staged on several such bridges.
One couple celebrated their special day by dangling in mid-air from a bridge in Pingjiang, also located in Hunan province.

But how safe is it?
This was the question on everyone's minds as the city geared up for the bridge's official opening.
But officials have staged high-profile events to try and reassure the public of the bridge's safety.
Officials sent in sledgehammers and even drove a car, filled with passengers, across the bridge earlier this year.
The BBC's Dan Simmons was invited to take a bash at the bridge.

And for good measure, they drove a car full of people over it
Park officials have said a maximum of 8,000 visitors will be allowed on the bridge each day.
So those wanting to add another thrill to their bucket list are strongly encouraged to book their slots in advance.

Foreign funds boost investment in Russia, but all's far from perfect www.rt.com

Investments in Russia have grown for a second week in a row, reports Sberbank CIB, citing data from Emerging Portfolio Fund Research. In the week through August 17, capital inflow has more than doubled.

During the week, investors bought $167 million worth of Russian assets, surging from $66 million the week before.

Despite the surplus, investments in Russia were the lowest among developing BRICS economies. In general, emerging markets attracted $5.15 billion, compared to $1.25 billion last week.

According to Sberbank analyst Cole Acheson, investors may not be convinced by the 20 percent rise in oil prices since the beginning of August. The market is also concerned by a possible toughening of rhetoric between Russia and Ukraine.

The Russian currency was slightly losing its position on Friday, trading at 64 rubles against the dollar and 72.5 against the euro. The ruble-traded MICEX and dollar-denominated RTS indices were down less than 1 percent.

Domestic currency slid with oil, which was trading at $50.52 per barrel of North Sea benchmark Brent and $48 for US WTI.

The ruble has been the best-performing among all emerging-market currencies outside of Brazil this year, however, a further rally is in question. Probable monetary easing and troubles with the current-account surplus, which dropped to $16.4 billion in July from $50.6 billion in the same period last year, may hit the Russian currency, said an economist for Russia at Bank of America, Vladimir Osakovskiy, in an interview with Bloomberg.

Shares in major Russian companies were also in the red, with Gazprom, Sberbank, and Rosneft all sliding less than 1 percent.

News site Gawker.com to shut down next week www.bbc.com

The news site Gawker.com will shut down next week, just days after its parent company was purchased by Univision.
Gawker founder Nick Denton told staff on Thursday afternoon, a post on its website said.
Media firm Univision agreed to buy Gawker Media for $135m (£103m) at a bankruptcy auction.
Gawker filed for bankruptcy after losing a $140m privacy lawsuit brought by former wrestler Hulk Hogan, paid for by Paypal co-founder Peter Thiel.
Mr Thiel funded Mr Hogan's case saying he wanted to curb the company's "bullying", after the site published an article that outed Mr Thiel as gay.
Founded 14 years ago, Gawker is known for its no-holds-bar approach to reporting, including breaking gossip stories on high-powered celebrities and business leaders.
Univision is most commonly known in the US as the country's biggest Spanish-language media company. It also owns a 40% stake in the satirical website The Onion.
'Losing Gawker.com hurts'
In a memo to his staff, seen by the news agency AP, Mr Denton said: "Sadly, neither I nor Gawker.com, the buccaneering flagship of the group I built with my colleagues, are coming along for this next stage.
"We have not been able to find a single media company or investor willing also to take on Gawker.com. The campaign being mounted against its editorial ethos and former writers has made it too risky. I can understand the caution."
He added that he would move out of the news and gossip business but "work to make the web a forum for the open exchange of ideas and information".
A US bankruptcy court later approved Univision's purchase of Gawker Media, which owns seven websites in total.
They are: Gawker.com, Deadspin, Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Kotaku, Jalopnik, and Jezebel.
The post on Gawker's website said plans for future coverage and its website's archives had not yet been finalised.
Gawker employees took to Twitter to express their sadness about the decision to shut down the sites.
"Our other sites, including Kotaku, live on, but losing the vibrant Gawker.comhurts," tweeted Stephen Totilo, editor-in-chief of Kotaku.
Bobby Finger, a staff writer for Jezabel, tweeted, "I'm one of countless people who owes Gawker so, so, so much."
Another staff writer, Jordan Sargent, wrote: "Gawker is dead because Peter Thiel (w the help of Charles harder) has succeeded in creating a world where owning gawker is simply not viable."
Former Gawker reporter Sam Biddle wrote simply, "I am heartbroken".
Financial trouble
Earlier this year Gawker was sued by Hulk Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, after the website published a video of Mr Hogan having sex with the wife of a friend from 2007.
A three-week trial ended with the jury ruling in the former wrestler's favour and ordering Gawker to pay $115m in compensation and $25m in punitive damage.
Gawker asked the judge for a new trial, but that request was rejected. Many experts though expect that the original verdict will be overturned on appeal.

The Mayor sounded his interest in cooperating with the IFC in infrastructure development, building housing apartments, creating workplaces, improving governance and the citizens’ participation. “Your expertise and investment is highly valuable in solving the urgent problem facing Ulaanbaatar”, he said.
 
In response, Mr Hyun said that the IFC is interested in collaboration in water treatment, solar energy usage and development of public transport. Moreover, because the private companies offer numerous projects on solar energy and water treatment, “we would like to advise you to improve Public and Private Partnership”, he said.

U.S. judge rejects Uber's driver expenses settlement www.reuters.com

A U.S. judge on Thursday rejected an attempt by Uber Technologies Inc to settle a class action lawsuit with drivers who claimed they were employees and entitled to expenses.
 
In a case that has been closely watched in Silicon Valley, where many companies use on-demand workers, U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco ruled the settlement was not fair or adequate for Uber drivers.
 
Some drivers had objected to terms of the settlement valued at up to $100 million, which would have affected roughly 385,000 current and former drivers in California and Massachusetts.
 
Uber drivers contended in the lawsuit they should be deemed employees and reimbursed for expenses such as gasoline and vehicle maintenance. Those expenses are now borne by the drivers.
 
The proposed settlement would have kept drivers classified as independent contractors. Several drivers who were part of the class filed objections with the court, particularly because the proposed amount was well below the total potential damages in the case of roughly $850 million.
 
In a statement, Uber said it believed the settlement was fair and reasonable.
 
"We're disappointed in this decision and are taking a look at our options," the company said.
 
Chen noted that part of the proposed settlement, $16 million, would only have been paid to drivers if Uber's valuation grew by a certain benchmark within a year of any initial public offering.
 
Because Uber could not provide specific information that such an outcome was likely, Chen said he would not consider those dollars as part of the settlement. The remaining $84 million, Chen said, represented a "substantial discount" on the full value of driver claims.
 
Among Chen's primary concerns were claims related to the Private Attorney General Act, which could come with penalties far exceeding the $1 million the settlement allowed. PAGA, passed in California in 2004, states that individuals may pursue civil penalties for labor code violations, and share any payment recovered with the state.
 
Both parties could reach a new agreement that satisfies the judge's concerns, said Shannon Liss-Riordan, the attorney representing the drivers.
 
"But if not, as I’ve said before, I will take the case to trial and fight my hardest for the Uber drivers," she said.
 
However, Liss-Riordan said, if there is no settlement agreement, the number of drivers included in the case would drop to about 8,000, because many drivers did not opt out of the arbitration clause in Uber's licensing agreement.

India to tap into Russia’s undeveloped coal, iron ore deposits www.mining.com

India plans to expand the scope of its current investments in the Russian commodity market by helping the European nation developed its large coal and iron ore reserves, as well as boosting Russia’s fertilizers sector, local media reported.
 
During the 5th meeting of the India-Russia Working Group on Modernization and Industrial Cooperation, both sides also identified other fields for potential cooperation, including the modernization of steel manufacturing facilities in India and participation of Indian power equipment supplier in upgrading Russia’s power sector, Economic Times reports.
 
New Delhi has stepped up efforts this year to grab major stakes in Russian mining and energy companies. In March, a group of Indian state firms grabbed about 50% of a Siberian oil field run by Russia’s main crude producer, Rosneft.
 
Three months later, India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation said it would allocate a total of $5 billion this year to speed up its projects in Russia, Sputnik News reported.
 
India’s total investment in Russia's oil and gas sectors could reach $15 billion over the next four years, Minister of Industry and Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman said last month, RT reported.
 
According to Sitharaman, New Delhi injected $8 billion into the Russian energy sector prior to 2015, while Moscow’s investments in India totalled $3 billion.
 
Behind the transactions, there is India’s interest in securing supply of coal, liquefied natural gas (LNG), diamonds and fertilizers from Russia.

Volvo and Uber to jointly develop self-driving car www3.nhk.or.jp

Swedish-based auto firm Volvo Car Group has agreed on a business alliance with ride-hailing service Uber to develop self-driving cars.
 
Volvo announced the agreement with Uber on Thursday. They will invest 300 million dollars to jointly develop the autonomous vehicle based on Volvo's cars.
 
They will also cooperate in developing highly accurate 3-dimensional maps and sensors used to detect objects in busy streets and other diverse environments.
 
Analysts say Volvo wants to create self-driving cars as early as possible in cooperation with Uber. Volvo has the software technology for such vehicles, and Uber hopes to introduce new ride-sharing services using driverless cars with sophisticated safety technologies.
 
Major auto companies and information technology firms are teaming up to develop self-driving cars.
 
General Motors has developed self-driving cars with one of Uber's rivals. Ford has invested in 4 ventures to put driverless vehicles on the market in 5 years.

Asia stock markets lifted as oil passes $50 a barrel www.bbc.com

Asian share markets are higher after oil prices rose above $50 a barrel on speculation major producers are going to reduce output.
Crude prices have risen by more than 20% from its August low, meaning oil has swung back into a so-called bull market.
Japan's Nikkei rose 0.44% at the open to 16,558.38 while the broader Topix gained 0.4% to 1,296.26.

Turkey may face gas shortages if Russian pipeline not built ‘immediately’ www.rt.com

Ankara should implement Gazprom’s Turkish Stream pipeline as soon as possible, or face problems with natural gas supplies after 2019, according to Ali Şen, chairman of Bosphorus Gaz, a major importer from Russia.Şen is warning that the Russia-Ukraine gas transit contract expires in 2019 and may not be renewed. Turkey gets 14 billion cubic meters of gas per year through the route.
 
“The Turkish Stream project must accelerate. According to the existing contract, gas flowing into Turkey through the Western Line [through Ukraine] will be cut on January 1, 2019. We will have gas shortages if we don’t start working on alternatives now. We don’t have any more patience for more delays,” Şen said in an interview with Anadolu Agency.
 
The Turkish Stream pipeline is intended to deliver gas from the Russian Black Sea coast to Turkey and on to Greece. The project was shelved in 2015 after Turkey shot down a Russian warplane in Syria, but the recent rapprochement between Moscow and Ankara has given the pipeline new life. The capacity is 32 billion cubic meters (bcm), of which Turkey would take about 14 bcm, with the rest going to Europe.
 
Russia is Turkey’s biggest natural gas supplier, selling 28-30 bcm annually for about $6.5 billion. Bosphorus Gaz buys about 3 bcm from Russia.Besides the route through Ukraine, Turkey pumps up to 16 bcm of Russian gas through Blue Stream, another Black Sea pipeline. If the Russia-Ukraine gas transit contract is not extended, the Turkish Stream pipeline not built, and there are technical issues with Blue Stream, Turkey will face a gas shortage.
 
“In the Blue Stream project, pipes sometimes run for more than 2,000 meters under the Black Sea. It would also be a serious problem for gas supply if there was a technical issue. This is another reason why we should start working on Turkish Stream right away,” Şen said.

Authorities investigate after Tesla car catches fire www.reuters.com

Tesla is working with French authorities to find out why one of its electric cars burst into flames during a test drive.
The four passengers were able to get out of the Model S 90D unharmed, Tesla said.
The incident happened in the area of Biarritz and Bayonne, in the south west of the country.
It comes about three years after the firm's shares dropped following other fires in its Model S cars.
Footage of the incident was caught on camera by witnesses.Three people and a Tesla employee were in the car during the fire earlier this week.
According to local media, the driver had signed up for a test drive on Facebook.
He accelerated on one of the town's main roads when a loud sound was heard coming from the car, the newspaper Sud-Ouest reported.
"In less than a minute, the car was in flames and, in five minutes, it was totally destroyed," the driver, named as Nicolas, was quoted as saying.
A Tesla official said: "Nobody was harmed. The vehicle provided warning and passengers were able to safely exit the vehicle."
"We are undertaking a full investigation and will share our findings as soon as possible," the official added.
In 2013, two instances of Tesla cars catching fire were recorded by US federal regulators, according to Agence France-Presse.
In each, the cars hit debris on the road that pierced the chassis and caused a battery fire.
Both cars were gutted by flames, although the drivers in each incident escaped unharmed.
A third case was also reported in Merida, in Mexico
