Remarks of Ambassador Richard L. Buangan at the UNMISS Sendoff Ceremony for Mongolian Peacekeepers to South Sudan
September 17, 2025 As delivered
Brigadier General Usukhbayar, distinguished guests,
Good afternoon,
I am honored to be here today with you all, Officers, Soldiers and Family Members, of the 15th Mongolian Battalion as you begin your deployment in support of UN peacekeeping operations in South Sudan.
Over the last two decades, Mongolia has established itself as a leader in supporting global peacekeeping operations. In Iraq, Afghanistan, and throughout Africa, Mongolia’s peacekeepers have upheld international law, protected human rights, and maintained global stability,
Throughout history, Mongolia’s men and women in uniform have never wavered in the face of danger. The mission before you will require the same level of courage, tenacity, skill, leadership, and compassion that those who have served before you have demonstrated in the past.
This deployment will be challenging, but we know that you have trained hard and are prepared for this mission. You should be proud that Mongolian PKO troops are currently making a difference for the people in South Sudan. Just earlier this year, displaced civilians received refuge at a Mongolian Battalion base, reinforcing the important role of Mongolian peacekeepers and underscoring the trust they earned from the civilian population.
Escalating hostilities have stalled the reconciliation process. As peacekeepers, you have been charged with a critical role in stopping the violence to allow the implementation of a peace deal for the people of South Sudan.
On behalf of the United States, I thank each of you and your families for your sacrifice and willingness to defend those who cannot defend themselves, and to move one step closer to global peace.
May God be with you in your journey. We pray for your safety and your success in bringing peace to this troubled region of the world. We are very, very much proud of you. Thank you all for your service.
