Airbnb invests in India's biggest hotel company www.cnn.com

New Delhi (CNN Business)Airbnb is investing in an Indian hotel chain that wants to become the world's biggest within five years.

The company took part in the latest funding round at OYO, one of India's most valuable startups, it said Monday. Neither Airbnb nor OYO would comment on the size of the investment, but it could be as much as $200 million, according to media reports. OYO was valued at $5 billion in 2018.
"Emerging markets like India and China are some of Airbnb's fastest-growing, with our growth increasingly powered by tourism to and from these markets," Greg Greeley, president of Homes at Airbnb, said in a statement. "In many of these markets, OYO is empowering local hospitality entrepreneurs to provide more options to more travelers," he added.
OYO, which started five years ago as a platform to book budget hotels in India, now has about 460,000 rooms across eight countries including China, Malaysia, Indonesia and the United Kingdom. It claims to be one of the top five hospitality chains in China, where it has more than 5,000 hotels in 280 cities.
Headquartered in Gurgaon, a tech city on the outskirts of Delhi, OYO says it is adding rooms faster than the world's top three hotel chains combined and aims to beat global leader Marriott (MAR) by 2023.

Wall Street English opens in Mongolia www.thepienews.com

English language course provider Wall Street English is expanding in Mongolia, launching a new franchise operation with partner company Metro Development Group Mongolia.

The first centre is due to open shortly in Mongolia’s capital Ulan Bator, and another four centres will be opened in the coming four years in key urban areas across the wider region.

“There’s a gap in the market for a more modern, innovative and flexible branded English learning approach”

The new operation, WSE explained in a statement, will target a “gap in the market” opened by a lack of innovation in language teaching provision coupled with strong demand for English language learning.

“There’s a gap in the market for a more modern, innovative and flexible branded English learning approach. The Wall Street English blended learning model seemed like the perfect match,” Odsuren Badarch, CEO of the Metro Development Group, said in a statement.

“It’s clear that what people value more than anything is flexibility in their learning, something that is currently not on offer in the adult English language learning market in the region.”

The English language tuition provider had announced expansion plans earlier this year as demand for English language tuition globally skyrockets.

“Mongolia represents the latest in a string of recent moves into new markets with, 21 new centre openings in 2018 and with more planned for 2019 as Wall Street English’s expansion plans are continuing apace,” Lex Baker, director of new business development at Wall Street English said in a statement.

“As globalisation continues, the adult English language market is growing with it. It has been estimated that the global value of the adult English language training market was in excess of US$28 billion in 2017 and it is forecast to grow by more than 80% over the next 5 years.”

Supporting Mongolian Universities To International Recognition www.qswownews.com

Sparsely populated and the 18th largest territory in the world, Mongolia is a land of blue sky, vast steppe and nomads. These are the things that make Mongolia unique among other countries of the world; these are what come to the mind of people worldwide about Mongolia. Since the transition in the 1990s to a market, from a command, economy, Mongolia has become open to the world. There have been radical changes in all sectors of the country.

In recent years Mongolian universities have been attaching significant importance to advancing to the world university level, to develop internationally recognised higher education, launch academic program reform, ensure a quality guarantee, and create a favourable learning environment for students and researchers. Within the framework of this reform, Mongolian universities’ academic programs have been evaluated and accredited by national and international relevant authorities.

The Government of Mongolia aims to promote the higher education sector’s progress, including the development of research universities, within the strategy of developing Mongolian universities to reach high world ranks, facilitate at least two universities to be recognised and listed among the top 100 Asian universities by 2024. This national strategy was adopted, and joint projects in collaboration with foreign universities and international organisations have been implemented. The project on improving university governance, supported by the ADB, ‘1,000 engineers’ Mongolia-Japan intergovernmental project can be mentioned as an example of this in practice.

Universities and higher education institutions

As of 2017, there were 15 state owned, 75 private, three foreign universities and colleges with a total number of 155,000 students. In recent years the number of foreign students applying for admission to Mongolian universities has been increasing, According to 2017 statistics, 1,636 students from 31 countries were officially registered. We are planning to increase the number of foreign students and to promote student exchange programs.

In recent years the number of international publications by Mongolian researchers has been increasing. As reported by Clarivate Analytics, since 2017, the number of research articles registered in the Web of Science has increased from 323 to 329 in 2016. As of October 2018 the number reached 301. In line with multiplying number of articles, the number of cited articles has significantly increased since 2017 reaching 1,000 in 2018. The National University of Mongolia (NUM) is leading the number of Web Science registered articles, followed by the Health Science University, Science and Technology University, Earth Science University and Education University of Mongolia. In terms of research area articles in geology, environment physics, palaeontology and biology have been prevalent.

Opportunities to study in Mongolia

Today international students applying for admission to Mongolian universities mainly choose to major in history, archaeology, anthropology, Mongolian studies and Mongolian studies. Further, we will give priority to foreign students interested in the natural sciences. A foreign student studying in Mongolia spends an average 1,600 dollars for tuition fees and approximately 2,300 dollars on living expenses, very low expenses compared to other countries in the world. We consider this to be one of the key opportunities to attract international students. An undergraduate degree can be completed within 4-5 years, a graduate degree within two years, and a doctoral degree within three years. We also offer short-term three-month summer, and one-year language programs.

Russian banks join Chinese alternative to SWIFT payment system www.rt.com

Several Russian banks have joined the China International Payments System (CIPS), to ease operations between the two countries, according to a senior official at the Central Bank of Russia (CBR).
“As for the cooperation on payment systems, a range of banks are already connected to CIPS, allowing to facilitate payments routing procedure,” Vladimir Shapovalov, who heads a division dealing with foreign regulators at the CBR’s international cooperation department, said earlier this week during the international Russian-Chinese forum.

Meanwhile, the regulator hopes that Chinese counterparts pay more attention to Russia’s own SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) alternative, SPFS (System for Transfer of Financial Messages), as it can further boost bilateral trade, the official added.

Russia is actively demonstrating the SPFS network, which was created in 2014 in response US threats of disconnecting Russia from SWIFT, to foreign partners, including China after its export version was finished late last year. The first system transaction involving a non-bank enterprise, was made by Russian oil major Rosneft in December 2017. Some 500 participants, with major Russian financial institutions and companies, have already joined.

On Thursday, the CBR announced that the Russian alternative to SWIFT made “significant progress” as it already complies with international standards and foreign players can be integrated in it. Some foreign banks already joined the SPFS, according to the CBR deputy governor Ksenia Yudaeva.

SWIFT is an international payment network that allows information about financial transactions to be sent and received around the globe. Over 11,000 financial institutions in more than 200 countries are connected to the network.
